King James Only?

In the last 100 years, more than 200 different versions of the Bible have been published and that number is growing daily.

But there are some people who believe that the King James Version of the Bible is the only Bible available today in English that contains the whole Word of God.

At Way of Life Literature, we, too, stand behind the King James Version of the Bible and we have produced many books and videotapes that examine the issues surrounding the Bible version debate. Please take a few minutes to examine our materials. The Bible you use
does make a difference.

ANSWERING THE MYTHS ON THE BIBLE VERSION DEBATE
This book answers 30 of the most popular of these myths, including the following: “King James Onlyism” was invented by a Seventh-day Adventist; there are no doctrinal differences between the modern versions and the KJV; Fundamentalists did not defend the KJV before the 1970s; the KJV been updated in thousands of places; King James I was a homosexual; the KJV translators said all versions are good; the King James Bible is too difficult to understand; Erasmus was a Roman Catholic humanist; Erasmus’ Greek New Testament was hastily done and filled with errors; Erasmus used a mere handful of Greek manuscripts; modern textual criticism is a legitimate science; the difference between the Greek Received Text and the Westcott-Hort text is small and insignificant; Westcott and Hort were theologically sound; Erasmus promised to insert the Johannine Comma if a Greek manuscript was produced and challenged Edward Lee to find a manuscript that included this passage; it is w6rong to paint the entire field of modern textual criticism with the brush of skepticism, seeing that there are also Bible-believing men such as A.T. Robinson and B.B. Warfield in this arena; it doesn't matter if the influential names in modern textual criticism are skeptics; the New King James Bible is merely an update of the King James; the New American Standard Version is basically the same as the King James except for updated language; the New International Version is a conservative evangelical translation that should be respected. 233 pages. $7.95

THE BIBLE'S AMAZING STORY
This summary of the Bible is designed for evangelism. Beginning in Genesis and going through Revelation it includes excerpts from the Scriptures with 205 headings and 204 explanatory footnotes to enable the reader to see the unfolding story of the Bible and to understand the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The footnotes contain explanations of Bible words and events. The Bible is a large book and to the uninitiated, it is complicated and difficult to understand. A teacher is required, as we see in Acts 8 in the case of the Ethiopian eunuch. He was a highly educated man, the treasurer of Ethiopia, and was reading the book of Isaiah; but when Philip the evangelist asked him if he understood what he read, he replied, “How can I, except some man should guide me?” The Bible’s Amazing Story is designed to assist those who are searching for the truth and who want to know what the Bible is all about. It is also an excellent study book for new converts. 167 pages, 5X8, perfect bound, $3.00

THE BIBLE VERSION QUESTION AND ANSWER DATABASE
(D.W. Cloud) [ISBN 1-58318-088-5] This book gives diligently-researched, in-depth answers to 82 of the most important questions on this topic. A vast number of myths are exposed, such as the myth that Erasmus promised to add 1 John 5:7 to his Greek New Testament if even one manuscript could be produced, the myth that the differences between the Greek texts and versions are slight and insignificant, and the myth that there are no doctrines affected by the changes in the modern versions. The author has carried on extensive correspondence with men on all sides of this issue for the past 25 years, and this book answers the challenges that are made by the opponents of “King James Onlyism,” including James White, D.A. Carson, Doug Kutilek, the editors of From the Mind of God to the Mind of Man and One Bible Only, etc. It also includes reviews of several of the popular modern versions, including the Living Bible, New Living Bible, Today’s English Version, New International Version, New American Standard Version, The Message, and the Holman Christian Standard Bible. 423 pages, 7X8, perfect bound, $17.95

EXAMINING “THE KING JAMES ONLY CONTROVERSY”
Author: DAVID CLOUD
This is an extensive and careful examination of James White’s book "Examining the King James Only Controversy." I did not read in White’s book long before I realized that it is misnamed. It should be titled
The Ruckman-Riplinger Controversy, because White paints the entire movement in defense of the King James Bible with the brush of these two individuals. White’s book appears, at first glance, to be an unemotional, objective, scholarly approach to the topic of Bible texts and versions. In reality, it is a vicious slander upon those who are defenders of the King James Bible and the Received Text underlying the KJV and other great Reformation Bibles. He implies throughout that every KJV defender is either a raving lunatic or an ignorant extremist. He ignores or passes over slightly, even flippantly, the great issues of the KJV defense, focusing, instead, upon the most indefensible representations. 115 pages, 5X8, perfect bound. $4.95

FAITH VS. THE MODERN BIBLE VERSIONS: A COURSE ON BIBLE TEXTS AND VERSIONS AND A 10-FOLD DEFENSE OF THE KING JAMES BIBLE (D.W. Cloud) [1-58318-087-7] To our knowledge, this 775-page volume is the most comprehensive course on this topic in print. It contains information that has not appeared in any other book defending the King James Bible and breaks new ground in several areas -- such as the importance of the ancient separatist versions in the defense of 1 John 5:7, an exposition of the doctrine of Bible preservation from 43 passages of Scripture, documentation of the corruption of evangelical scholarship over the past 50 years and of the apostasy that enveloped the 19th century as modern textual criticism was devised and that further enveloped the 20th century as modern textual criticism became entrenched, and documentation of the role played by Unitarians in the development of modern textual criticism, to name a few. If you are new to the Bible Version issue and want to understand it, we believe this is the book for you; and if you have already been studying this subject for some time, you will find a wealth of new things here. The course features 783 sectional review questions to reinforce the teaching. A separate teacher’s test book is available containing sectional and final tests with answer sheets. Dr. David Sorenson, author of Touch Not the Unclean Thing and Understanding the Bible Commentary, said: “I have read about 95%+ of your Faith vs. Modern Versions book. What a masterpiece!! I am so impressed with it. It is probably the finest book I have read on the issue. I have also just finished reading your new book on the Bible Version Hall of Shame--EXCELLENT!! What a wealth of history and information.” 775 pages, 7X8, perfect bound, $29.95

FOR LOVE OF THE BIBLE: THE BATTLE FOR THE KING JAMES VERSION AND THE RECEIVED TEXT FROM 1800 TO PRESENT (D.W. Cloud) [ISBN 1-58318-004-4] This book traces the history of the defense of the KJV and the Received Text from 1800 to present. The book includes hundreds of testimonies and biographies; sketches of churches, schools, and organizations that have defended the KJV; a digest of reviews and condensations of major books and articles written in defense of the KJV in the past 200 years; excerpts from rare books on this subject which are no longer available; a comprehensive overview of the varied arguments in favor of the KJV. For Love of the Bible also gives a history of the modern English versions, beginning with the English Revised of 1881. Also included is a history of textual criticism, revealing that most of the textual scholars from the 19th-century on were rationalists who denied the infallible inspiration of Scripture. The 46-page annotated bibliography is the most extensive in print on the subject, to our knowledge. A detailed index is also included. The author spent several thousand dollars researching the book and has written several hundred letters in this connection, communicating with men from around the world who stand for the KJV today. Michael Maynard, author of A History of the Debate over 1 John 5:7,8, wrote: “For Love of the Bible is a masterpiece. It ought to be in every academic, public, and special library in the world.” 4th edition, March 2006, 518 pages, 5X8, soft cover. $19.95.

THE GLORIOUS HISTORY OF THE KING JAMES BIBLE (D.W. Cloud). The King James Bible is not merely another translation. Its history is one of the most fascinating chapters of church history and reads almost like a novel. This book traces this glorious heritage, beginning with the Wycliffe Bible of the 14th century. Every English-speaking believer should know this history; yet, sadly, even in the staunchest Bible-believing churches it is rare to find someone who is informed about the great price that was paid to provide us with an excellent Bible in our own language. Chapters include the Wycliffe Bible (1380), the Tyndale New Testament (1526), the Coverdale Bible (1535), the Matthew’s Bible (1537), the Great Bible (1539), the Geneva Bible (1557), the Bishops Bible (1568), and the King James Bible (1611). Under the section on the KJV we look at the spiritual and literary and scholarly climate of that day, the amazing translation process itself, the peerless translators, the nature of the translation, Tyndale’s influence, and the KJV’s worldwide influence. We also answer the following questions: Was King James a homosexual? Hasn’t the KJV been revised and updated in thousands of places? Could the KJV be revised again? Is the King James Bible inspired? Isn’t the KJV too antiquated and difficult to read? The author has studied this history diligently. He has a massive private library of materials on this subject dating back to the 16th century and has researched the subject in many parts of the world, including England, Wales, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. Illustrated. 228 pages. $6.95

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF BIBLE TRANSLATORS (D.W. Cloud) [ISBN 1-58318-103-2] This book follows in the exciting footsteps of Bible writers and translators across Great Britain and Europe. This is history that every child of God will appreciate. Illustrated with 94 pictures taken on location of the places described above. 139 pages. $4.95

WHY WE HOLD TO THE KING JAMES BIBLE (D.W. Cloud) [ISBN 1-58318-104-0] This is an extensive defense of the King James Bible and refutation of the modern versions. We examine five reasons for holding to the KJV: (1) because of the doctrine of divine preservation, which authenticates the Traditional Greek Text underlying the King James Bible, (2) because the theories of textual criticism supporting the Modern Greek Text are heretical, (3) because the modern texts and versions are a product of end-time apostasy, (4) because of the King James Bible’s superior doctrine, and (5) because of its unmatched heritage. The book contains an exposition of the doctrine of Bible preservation, documentation of the apostasy that enveloped the 19th century as modern textual criticism was devised, and documentation of the role played by Unitarians in the development of modern textual criticism. The book concludes with an exciting study on the history of the English Bible from Wycliffe to the 1611 KJV. If you are new to the Bible Version issue and want to understand it, we believe this is the book for you. 466 pages. (Please be aware that this is the same book entitled "The Bible Version Issue" which is sold in the Advanced Bible Study Series.) $14.95

THINGS HARD TO BE UNDERSTOOD: A HANDBOOK OF BIBLICAL DIFFICULTIES (D.W. Cloud) [ISBN 1-58318-002-8] We are pleased to announce the 4th edition of Things Hard to Be Understood: A Handbook of Biblical Difficulties. The new edition is 85 pages longer than the 3rd edition and contains about 70 new entries. This very practical volume deals with a variety of biblical difficulties. Find the answer to the seeming contradictions in the Bible. Meet the challenge of false teachers who misuse biblical passages to prove their doctrine. Find out the meaning of difficult passages that are oftentimes overlooked in the Bible commentaries. Be confirmed in your confidence in the inerrancy and perfection of the Scriptures. Learn the meaning of difficult expressions such as “the unpardonable sin.” One unique feature of this volume is that it contains no criticism of the King James Bible. We don’t believe that it has any errors and we do not believe that any correction of it is necessary to solve the alleged contradictions and other difficulties. Another thing that sets this volume apart from others on this topic is its practical nature and the fact that it is written from a fundamentalist, Bible-believing Baptist viewpoint. Our objective is to help protect God’s people from the false teachers that abound in these last days. They raise nagging questions and doubts by misusing passages of Scripture to support their specious doctrines. They take Scripture out of context and otherwise abuse it, and we have dealt with many examples of this. For example, we examine verses misused by Seventh-day Adventists to support their doctrines of soul sleep and annihilation, verses misused by the Roman Catholic Church to support its doctrines of Mary and the Papacy and purgatory, verses misused by ecumenists and to justify their unscriptural goals (i.e., Mat. 7:1; Mk. 9:38-40; Jn. 13:35; 17:21; Acts 5:38-39; Rom. 14:4; 1 Cor. 4:5; 6:12-13; Eph. 4:3-6; and Jam. 4:11), verses misused to support infant baptism and baptismal regeneration (i.e., Mk. 16:6-17; Jn. 3:5; Acts 2:38; 22:16; Rom. 6:3-4; 1 Cor. 1:16; Titus 3:5; 1 Pet. 3:21), verses misused to support Calvinism (i.e., Jn. 6:37-40; 6:44; Acts 13:46-48; Rom. 8:29; 9:13-33; 11:19-32), and verses misused by those who deny the doctrine of eternal security. We deal with things such as the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, cremation, hair coverings, the first shall be last, did Jesus die on Friday, God forbid, God’s repentance, healing in the atonement, judging, the letter of the law, Melchizedek, self defense, sinless perfectionism, soul sleep, and the Trinity. Jerry Huffman, editor of Calvary Contender, testified: “You don’t have to agree with everything to greatly benefit from this helpful book.” 4th edition, April 2006. 385 pages, 7X8. Perfect bound. $19.95

ERRORS OF MODERN TEXTUAL CRITICISM (80 minutes, one DVD). The material for this presentation is drawn from the author's own extensive private library as well as from many important theological libraries in the U.S.A., Canada, and England. The modern versions (ASV, RSV, NASV, NIV, etc.) are based on the "science" of modern textual criticism which was developed in the 19th century and resulted in the English Revised Version of 1881. This two-part presentation exposes some of the chief errors of the “science” of textual criticism. We cover the following four points: First, modern textual criticism ignores the supernatural character of the Bible. Second, modern textual criticism ignores Satan’s attack on the Bible. Third, modern textual criticism ignores God’s promise of preservation. Fourth, modern textual criticism ignores the preeminence of faith. We trace the history of textual criticism back to its roots in the early part of the 19th century and expose the intimate association of textual criticism with theological modernism and Unitarianism. We look at the principles of textual criticism and then at the theology of the most influential
names in textual criticism from the past 200 years, including Johann Bengel, Karl Lachmann, Johann Griesbach, B.F. Westcott, F.J.A. Hort, Philip Schaff, George Vance Smith, Ezra Abbot, Joseph Thayer, Caspar Rene Gregory, and the editors of the United Bible Societies Greek New Testament, Carlo Martini, Kurt Aland, and Bruce Metzger. We show that modern textual criticism is not established from the principle of faith and therefore is wrong upon its very head. $19.95

HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH BIBLE (120 minutes, one DVD). This presentation covers the fascinating history of the English Bible from the 15th to the 17th centuries. We preached the lectures at Heritage Baptist University in Greenwood, Indiana, and used their collection of ancient Bibles as illustrations. We have also included pictures that we took on an extended
research trip to England, Wales, and Europe in April 2003. The presentation focuses on three major Bibles, the Wycliffe of 1484, the Tyndale of 1525, and the King James Bible of 1611, though we also cover the others of that era, such as the Geneva. $19.95

OLD TIME FUNDAMENTALISTS WHO STOOD FOR THE KJV (50 minutes, one DVD). Some recent publications have made the claim that fundamentalists of old did not defend the King James Bible and have argued that the defense of the KJV is of recent origin. This high-quality video presentation, which is packed with powerful visual illustrations, proves the error of this thinking. It documents fundamentalist leaders before 1960 who defended the King James Bible against the modern versions of their day. We look first at Benjamin Dearmore (1897-1969). He was Chairman of the Faculty at the Bible Baptist Seminary under J. Frank Norris until 1948 and also co-founded Worth Bible College and Trinity Valley Seminary. He edited an independent Baptist paper called The Message. Dearmore took a strong stand for the KJV. For example, in the May 28, 1959, issue of The Message, he wrote: “As for me, I will take the King James translation as the very Word of God for the English people. I believe it is without error. It is 100 percent correct.” Next we look at William Aberhart (1878-1943). He was an influential fundamentalist leader in western
Canada and took a bold stand for the KJV. We prove this with the testimony of his former students and with quotes from his writings. Finally we look at the life and ministry of Philip Mauro (1859-1952), a converted lawyer and one of the authors of The Fundamentals in the 1920s. His 1924 book Which Version: Authorized or Revised? boldly defends the KJV and refutes modern textual criticism. $19.95

WHY WE HOLD TO THE KING JAMES BIBLE (200 minutes, two DVDs). This high-quality videotape presents five of the reasons why we are convinced that English-speaking people need to hold to the King James Bible in the face of the onslaught of the modern versions. I. The KJV is based on the preserved Greek New Testament. II. The modern versions are based on the corrupt theories of modern textual criticism. III. The KJV is doctrinally superior to the modern versions. IV. The modern
versions are built on a foundation of deception. In this section we look at the history of the first modern English version, the English Revised Version of 1881. V. The KJV has an unmatched heritage. We look at the Tyndale Bible that became the foundation of the King James Bible. We then look at the King James Bible itself and its incomparable translation methodology by a team of some 50 of England’s greatest Bible scholars. $24.95
