Is it Wrong to Listen to "Clean" Secular Rock?
February 26, 2008 (David Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061, 866-295-4143, fbns@wayoflife.org; for instructions about subscribing and unsubscribing or changing addresses, see the information paragraph at the end of the article) -
I received the following question recently:
“I am a 14-year-old born-again Christian (proud of being born again) with a question about secular music. I do not approve of the rock lifestyle, but I like rock music. I have about 40% secular music and 60% Christian music on my iPod. I am very picky about the secular music on my iPod. I do not approve of music about sex, drugs, or alcohol. I also will not tolerate curse words and blasphemy. But throughout the Rock 'n' Roll scene, there are songs without any of this. I have found that it is hard to find one secular group that has none of this in any of their songs, but my philosophy has always been that I should judge the song instead of the singer. For example, John Lennon, one of the pill-popping adulterous Beatles who stated that he was more famous then Jesus, wrote a song entitled ‘Beautiful Boy’ for his son. I have always found this song sweet and enjoyed it, but the song ‘Imagine’ starts off with ‘Imagine there’s not heaven, it’s easy if you try.’ And I don't approve of that song. So this leads me to my question: In your opinion, should I not listen to any of the clean secular songs, because they are written by vulgar Rock 'n' Roll stars. I stress that I do not admire them, but I do love music a lot.”

Do We Need "Thee" and "Thou"?

Many criticize the use of “thee, thou, thy, and thine” in the King James Bible. They say that these expressions are antiquated and difficult to understand and therefore should be dropped.
It is important to understand that the use of these expressions in common English had already dropped out by 1611 when the King James Bible was published. We can see this by reading the Translator’s Preface and other writings of the translators.
Why, then, were these retained in the English Bible in the 17th century?
They were retained for the following two reasons.
First, the King James Bible retained THEE, THOU, and THINE for linguistic purposes.

INTRODUCTION BY BROTHER CLOUD
The following is excerpted from an article by Carmeron L. Horne, a member of Hillsdale Baptist Church, Tampa, Florida. As my readers know, I rarely print anything dealing with politics or American government. One reason is that many of our readers do not live in America. Another is that I believe the root cause of a nation's problems are spiritual, and as a preacher I can do more to help my nation by focusing on things related to strengthening churches than I can by addressing political/social evils. The following article, though, so skillfully exposes the lies promoted constantly by the mainstream humanistic media and the public education system that I want to share it with our readers. It is refreshing to hear some truth amidst the deceptive revisionist history one hears on every side today.

Is The Bible the Sole Authority for Faith and Practice?
Updated February 20, 2008 (first published March 5, 1999) (David Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Is the Bible the sole authority for faith and practice? The Roman Catholic Church says it is not. The Vatican II Council affirmed that “both Scripture and Tradition must be accepted and honoured with equal feelings of devotion and reverence” (Vatican II documents, “Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation,” Chap. 2, 9, p. 682).
Thus, Rome has boldly exalted its traditions to a status equal with Holy Scripture.
I frequently receive letters and e-mails from Catholics who challenge me about the authority of the Bible. They know that they cannot defend Catholic doctrine strictly from the Bible. If the Bible alone is the authority for faith and practice, it can easily be demonstrated from Scripture that the Catholic Church is false. The authority of the Bible is therefore at the heart of the difference between Roman Catholicism and churches that base their doctrine and practice strictly upon the Holy Scriptures.
Following is an example of the many challenges I have received:

The Great White Throne Judgment

The following is from the Advanced Bible Studies Series course on the book of Revelation (457 pages), which is available from Way of Life Literature. (It is best to order them by phone at 866-295-4143, but they can also be ordered from the newly redesigned online order form.)
There are currently 19 titles in the series, and any of them can be special ordered in large print and in ring coil binding. We don’t believe that you will find better quality, more truly life-changing Bible courses from any other source. They are based strictly upon the King James Bible and the powerful word studies assist in the understanding of the KJV but never cast doubt upon it. They are thorough and comprehensive. They are very practical and have the objective of producing well-equipped Christian soldiers that have a solid understanding of the Bible. They stress holy and obedient Christian living and separation from worldliness and error, exalt evangelism and the New Testament church, and promote world missions. They emphasize the crucial differences between law and grace and positional and practical sanctification, and they continually fortify the student’s understanding of the life-changing doctrines such as justification, substitutionary atonement, and eternal security. The courses are non-Calvinistic and interpret Bible prophecy literally. The student will be prepared to stand against the wiles of the Devil and to refute the major theological heresies of our day. One pastor said the books “are extremely helpful for any Christian, no matter where they are spiritually; the practical application is extremely helpful and edifying.”

Rick Warren Tells Pastors to get Rid of Troublemakers
February 13, 2008 (David Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061, 866-295-4143, fbns@wayoflife.org; for instructions about subscribing and unsubscribing or changing addresses, see the information paragraph at the end of the article) -
In the November 14, 2007, issue of Ministry Toolbox, Rick Warren told pastors to get rid of troublemakers.
Warren begins with the erroneous statement that the Bible “talks more about unity of the church than it does about either heaven or hell.” In fact, the Bible speaks more about heaven and hell than about unity and it speaks far more about the importance of sound doctrine and practice and separation from error than it does about unity.
Warren makes no distinction between trouble that comes because of heresy and self-will and trouble that comes because of the truth. God’s people are nowhere instructed to blindly follow pastors. They have an obligation before God to “prove all things” (1 Thess. 5:21).
In a fashion that is one of his fearful trademarks, Warren lifts Scripture out of context to prove his point.
First, he uses 2 Timothy 2:23-26, which only deals with how to handle “foolish and unlearned questions” asked by those who are in the snare of the devil. It has nothing to do with legitimate biblical questions asked by sincere Christians who care about God’s Word. Next, he uses 2 Timothy 2:14, which is a warning about striving about “words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.” Again, this is a warning about false teaching, and it has nothing whatsoever to do with sincere biblical challenges.

SADDLEBACK CHURCH ROCKING & ROLLING
Updated February 12, 2008 (first published January 23, 2007) (David Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. We have often warned that one of the dangers and errors of contemporary Christian music is its refusal to separate from secular party music such as rock and rap. This is evident at Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church in southern California.
On April 17, 2005, when Rick Warren announced his P.E.A.C.E. program to Saddleback Church, he first sang Jimi Hendrix’s drug-drenched song “Purple Haze” to the congregation, accompanied by his “praise and worship” band! He said he had wanted to do that for a long time.
The following is from the Saddleback website for 2005:
“Our dances have become some of the most anticipated of our social events with hundreds of people attending. This Summer’s Night dance in our Worship Center promises to be the same. It will begin with a light buffet style dinner followed by dancing to the sounds of our DJ on a huge 3,000 square foot ballroom competition floor. Professional lighting, effects and sound all blend together for a high-quality experience, all at an extremely reasonable price! Whether you bring a special friend, come alone or with a group, make sure you come ready to have fun! Music will consist of a wide variety providing for specific dances and freestyle. And what’s a summer night without some beach music and reggae?”
Why do Fundamtental Schools Go Apostate?
February 7, 2008 (David Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061, 866-295-4143, fbns@wayoflife.org; for instructions about subscribing and unsubscribing or changing addresses, see the information paragraph at the end of the article) -
An excellent new book has been published by Don Jasmin entitled “Why Do Fundamental Schools Go Apostate?”
The book can be ordered from the author at Fundamental Baptist Ministries, P.O. Box 489, West Branch, MI 48661. 989-873-4778 (phone), www.fundamentalbaptistministries.com (web site).
Jasmin traces the spiritual downfall of two schools founded by D.L. Moody in the late 19th century, and applies the principles to things that are happening in evangelical and fundamentalist schools today.
In this reviewer’s estimation the author makes a bit too much of Moody’s “greatness,” but he also does not draw back from documenting the evangelist’s frightful compromise.

I Believe in Miracles

When we warn that God does not promise always to heal and when we teach that certain sign gifts ceased with the apostles, we are consistently charged with not believing in God’s miracle working power. I can’t speak for others, but I know that for me that accusation is not true. I believe in a miracle-working God.
My God can do anything He pleases. He created the world in six days. He destroyed the ancient world by a great flood. He parted the Red Sea so the millions of the children of Israel marched through on dry ground. He brought Jesus into this world through the womb of a virgin. He died on the cross for my sins, and He rose from the dead the third day! He poured out the Holy Spirit on Pentecost with mighty signs and wonders.
My God can do ANYTHING, but my God also does what He wants when He wants! And He isn’t flooding the world today, nor is He parting the Red Sea, nor is He dying on a cross or rising from the dead. And He is not giving a new Pentecost today. That part of His glorious plan has been accomplished, and He is marching on gloriously toward the End.
