December 18, 1997 (David W. Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061-0368, fbns@wayoflife.org) - One of the members of the Board of Directors for Promise Keepers is Mike Timmis, a Roman Catholic lawyer from Detroit. In October Attorney Michael E. Thomas (2300 Austin Parkway, Ste. 140, Flint, MI 48507) interviewed Timmis. The following is his record of the interview:

"I called Attorney Mike Timmis in Detroit to ask him some questions about Promise Keepers. He did verify that he is on the Board of Directors. He made several comments which I will relate here without any editorialization.

"When I asked him if he was a Catholic, he said he attended mass every day, he is on the Stewards of Tomorrow which is a committee for the Archdiocese to raise funds for the Catholic church in Detroit. He emphasized that he is a Roman Catholic, not a Catholic. There is a difference between the two in America according to him. He stressed that he is a practicing Catholic and that Jesus has called him to worship in that church. His belief, however, is in Jesus only. HE DOES FOLLOW CATHOLIC DOGMA AND TRADITION. Contrary to written reports he has seen, he is not a charismatic in the contemporary sense of the word. He does possess the charis of teaching according to him.

"For the past fourteen years HE HAS DEDICATED HIMSELF TO BRINGING CATHOLICS AND EVANGELICALS TOGETHER. HE DOES NOT COMPROMISE HIS CATHOLIC BELIEFS IN ORDER TO DO THAT. He is appearing at the 'Stand in the Gap' rally in Washington, DC October 4 and is one of the main speakers. HE WILL BE SPEAKING ON SECTARIANISM AS A SIN. He stressed that we cannot agree on dogma, but we must agree in Christ.

"With regard to Promise Keepers, he indicated that there are many charismatics on the board of Promise Keepers. His one complaint (really his passionate concern) has been that Promise Keepers has not been inclusive enough of Catholics. When I asked him what he wanted Promise Keepers to do, HE INDICATED HE WOULD LIKE MORE CATHOLIC SPEAKERS AT THE PROMISE KEEPERS RALLIES. He believes Catholic men are hungry to hear the Word and would come to hear Catholic speakers.

"He did give me a word of advice about Promise Keepers. He indicated it is simply a movement of the Holy Spirit but that true faith should be placed in Jesus Christ. Promise Keepers is of God, but it has feet of clay like any other movement or religion.

"He paraphrased John 13:34 and 35 in indicating that Promise Keepers does promote Christians loving one another, which is a test of our discipleship.

"I hope this information has been of some assistance to you. It has been of significant assistance to me" (Oct. 8, 1997, Attorney Michael E. Thomas, describing an interview with Mike Timmis).
